The first thing you encounter is an outline of a room; a trace on the ground that signifies a potential: a room could be built here. This is where it all begins, with a foundation. Once you have passed through the outlined room you come to the doorstep, the threshold, which you cross, and immediately after a stack of books. It is a 3-dimensional form, a sculpture, and an encapsulated image of our constant search for knowledge and education, our inquiring minds. The final element of the piece is the most essential one: a vertical pillar, here in the shape of a wooden slab that has been cast into bronze. The pole is at once a stele, a sacrificial altar, and a beginning. The work has moved from 2 to 3 dimensions, from a horizontal field to a vertical column. It has gone from an outline or surface to a relief (the doorstep) to sculpture (the stack of books) and to architecture, the vertical column. Together the individual elements of the work set the stage for a narrative.
